Change Your Life with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

We use cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) to enable you to become calm, self-assured and enjoy a better quality of life. We will show you ways of changing your behavior, which will change the way you feel and think. You'll learn how to erase your fears by gradually facing the situations that trigger them. This involves taking a series of small steps that bring you into contact with the circumstances that you fear and avoid.

With practice, you will lose your fears because they are not truly dangerous. As you begin to feel them fading you will know the treatment is working. This will inspire you to defeat it completely and take charge of your life. You will have learned how to face, embrace, and erase fear. With this new tool at your disposal, you'll be able to deal with any future signs of returning symptoms and thereby prevent setbacks. You’ll be your own therapist!

CBT focuses on your present emotional and behavioral difficulties even though we know that past experiences have contributed to your current problems. It requires practicing new behaviors from one to two hours per day, which is the key for eliminating and reducing fear from distressing circumstances. Treatment is usually for 10 and 25 sessions, and you'll notice that it's working after just a few sessions.

You'll find our Center to be warm, nonjudgmental and supportive. Many people have some hesitancy about entering therapy, but once they start feeling better and thinking clearly, their apprehension evaporates and is replaced by the joy of knowing they are in charge of their lives.

We have different levels of treatment depending on the severity of the problem.

  • Individual Treatment: for those who desire one-on-one visits with the therapist. Treatment usually involves once or twice a week, 45-50 minute therapy sessions.

  • Intensive Treatment: for those with severe problems that require therapist supervised assistance in completing the therapeutic work. Treatment sessions are usually for four hours, five days per week, Monday through Friday.

  • Medications:  For patients who are taking medications, we like to consult with your physician so that we are working together for the best treatment outcome. For patients who are not taking medications and wish to try them, we can provide referrals to psychiatrists who specialize in medication management. Dr. Carolyn Wilson, has experience providing both medication management and cognitive behavior therapy using ERP for OCD. However for those who do not choose to take medications, we can effectively proceed with CBT since research shows that CBT may work just as well with or without medications.
