Agoraphobia occurs as a result of panic attacks. This causes fear of being in
places or situations that might be embarrassing or difficult to leave in the
event of a panic attack or panic like symptoms, for example, dizziness or sudden
diarrhea.
This apprehension causes widespread avoidance of a variety of situations that
can include being alone outside the home, or even inside; being in crowds;
traveling by automobile, bus, or airplane; or being on a bridge or in an
elevator. Some people are able to enter the situations, but they have
considerable dread while in them. Others can confront the feared circumstances
if a companion accompanies them.
The persistent avoidance of situations may impair the ability of the person
to work or carry out the routine activities of daily life.
