 Paul R. Munford, Ph.D.
Paul R. Munford, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and internationally
recognized expert in the treatment of OCD and the anxiety disorders. He has
successfully treated hundreds of people, and trained scores of psychology
interns, psychiatry residents, and social work and nursing trainees. He has
published journal articles on anxiety disorders, two self-help books for OCD
sufferers, and made numerous presentations on the treatment of
panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Dr. Munford also developed and
directed the behavior therapy program for the OCD Partial Hospitalization
Program at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute where he was Adjunct Professor of
Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences.
Retiring from that position after 22 years, he relocated in Sacramento,
continued his clinical practice, and joined the Department of Psychiatry,
University of California, Davis School of Medicine as a Clinical Professor. There
he continued training psychiatry residents, psychology interns and other mental
health trainees in cognitive behavior therapy. Subsequently, he co-founded the
Anxiety Treatment Center of Northern California and directed its intensive
outpatient treatment program for OCD. That center is now closed because of his
move to the San Francisco Bay area where he and Dr. Arna Munford have
established the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Center for OCD and Anxiety.
He sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Obsessive Compulsive
Foundation and is a member of the American Psychological Association, Anxiety
Disorders Association of America, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive
Therapies, and Marin County
Psychological Association.
Arna M. Munford, Ph.D.
Arna M. Munford, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist with over 23 years
experience. She provided cognitive behavior therapy to children, adolescents,
and adults with chronic pain and other serious medical conditions as an
assistant clinical professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and the
Department of Psychiatry, UCLA School of Medicine. She also conducted research
at the Sepulveda Veterans Administration Medical Center on the effectiveness of
cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety and depression in patients with coronary
disease. She then became the Director of Psychological Services in The
Department Of Cardiology, Cedars Sinai Medical Center Los Angeles where she
developed and directed cognitive behavior therapy programs for fear and anxiety
reduction in cardiac patients. She has published findings from her studies in
scientific journals and presented them at professional meetings.
After moving to the Sacramento area, Dr. Munford joined the Department of
Psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente specializing in the treatment of anxiety, anger,
and other psychological problems. She also conducted research on the benefits of
cognitive behavior training for post cardiac event patients in the Department of
Cardiology’s Multifit program at Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento. Subsequently
retiring, she joined her husband, Dr. Paul Munford, in private practice and
continues to specialize in CBT for the anxiety disorders and co-directs the
Cognitive Behavior Therapy Center For OCD and Anxiety. She is a member of the
American Psychological Association, Obsessive Compulsive Foundation, Anxiety
Disorders Association of America, the Association for Behavioral and
Cognitive Therapies, and the Marin County Psychological Association.
Jonathan R. Barkin, Psy.D.
Jonathan R. Barkin, Psy.D. earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He received his masters and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Denver, Graduate School of Professional Psychology. While studying at DU, Jonathan gained extensive experience in the treatment of OCD, social and specific phobias, generalized anxiety, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, substance abuse, and depression. He has worked in inpatient medical settings, college health facilities, forensic institutions, community mental health centers, and Veteran Affairs hospitals and clinics. Additionally, Jonathan conducted research examining the impact of learning disabilities, specifically dyslexia, on one’s self-concept. Jonathan has experience with psychological assessment, individual therapy, couples therapy, and group treatment.
Dr. Barkin is currently registered with the California Board of Psychology as a Psychological Assistant to Dr. Paul Munford. He is receiving supervision from Dr. Munford in cognitive behavior therapy with an emphasis on treating OCD and anxiety. Dr. Barkin is seeing individuals in weekly outpatient sessions and in the intensive outpatient program at the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center for OCD & Anxiety.
Carolyn Z. Wilson, M.D.
Carolyn Z. Wilson M.D. is a psychiatrist certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She graduated from Northwestern University School of Medicine and completed her residency in psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco in 1988. She is also a graduate of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Wilson has a long-standing interest in psychopharmacology, cognitive behavioral therapies, and evidence-based treatments. She has completed the Behavioral Therapy Institute’s in depth training program in cognitive behavioral therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder. To keep up to date with research in the field, she maintains an ongoing study group looking at the latest scientific findings in psychopharmacology and has regular consultation with the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Center for OCD & Anxiety and the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy.
